Glen Hodgetts - Head of Chambers
Glen gained a First Class Honours Degree in Law from Lancaster University in 1993 and was awarded the Lancaster and Morecombe Law Society Prize for best degree result. He was called to the Bar in 1995 and then worked as an in-house Barrister at a leading immigration charity, training its 50 lawyers. In 2000, he went into independent practice and became a tenant at Tooks Chambers where he remained for 13 years. Sadly, because of Conservative government cut backs to legal aid, Tooks Chambers formally dissolved on 27th December 2013 but Glen continued to practice as a sole practitioner from 14th October 2013 - setting up his own Bristol centred, Great George Street Chambers.
Glen became accredited as a public access immigration barrister (also sometimes referred to as "direct access") in December 2012.
Following recent changes to the Bar Code of Conduct, Glen is now accredited with the Bar Council, as a 'Public Access Barrister', which means that he is able to provide legal services direct to a private paying lay client without the need to also instruct a solicitor. A member of the public can thus get direct and affordable access to a specialist immigration and asylum barrister, such as Glen, without having to also pay a solicitor, thus potentially saving considerable cost to the client and potentially, a quicker streamlined service.
Any member of the public may now contact Glen direct to ascertain whether the case is suitable for 'public access' (also referred to as "direct access") simply by phoning 07966 495 468 (between 12 noon and 2pm daily) or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
A more detailed view of what a Direct Access Immigration Barrister can do can be seen by clicking on the “Public Access” link in the blue bar menu link at the top of this page.
Direct Access for the Public
He has now over 24 years' experience of acting for clients in immigration and asylum cases before the First and Upper Tier Tribunals, Administrative Court and Court of Appeal. He also has experience of taking cases to the House of Lords (now the Supreme Court) and European Court of Human Rights. Glen is ranked as a Leader at the Bar in his specialist area, immigration and asylum, by Chambers and Partners.
Glen has published extensively on immigration and human rights' law; he has previously acted as Deputy Editor of the 'IAS Case Law Update' published by The Stationery Office, acted as Constultant Editor of the UK Human Rights' Reports and Journal published by Jordans Publishers, and regularly contributed to 'Legal Action' as part of the Tooks Chambers Immigration Team and also the immigration team at Garden Court Chambers.
Although Glen was a former member of Tooks Chambers based in London, he has always operated from his offices in Bristol. Thus unlike most other London based direct access immigration barristers, his Bristol office allows him to offer affordable immigration advice and represention to clients, on appeals heard at the Newport Hearing centre in South Wales, housing both the First and Upper Tier Tribunals of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber and in the Administrative Court in Judicial Review hearings based in Bristol and Cardiff, South Wales. Glen is of course able to conduct cases in London and also see you at a London office if required.
